Teachers and Researchers

Nearly 1 000 professors-researchers and permanent researchers, many from the partner institutions, universities and national research organizations (CNRS, INSERM, INRIA), work at or with the École normale supérieure.

Each year, many foreign professors are invited to give lectures and seminars, to participate in education and training, and to collaborate on research projects.

ENS laboratories also welcome several hundred researchers of various nationalities for stays of one to six months or more..

ENS recruits

The École normale supérieure’s dedication to the renewal and mobility of its staff of teachers-researchers and researchers goes hand-in-hand with its policy of university partnership.

Research units present at the ENS sites are entirely integrated into its various departments. The participation of researchers in instruction, tutoring, in addition to the organization of colloquia, workshops and new seminars, contributes to the quality and diversity of the ENS academic environment.

ENS laboratories train a large number of doctoral students (650); with nearly as many PhD students as master’s students, ENS ranks highly among French graduate schools. In the sciences, the exceptional ratio of doctoral students to researchers translates to 400 doctoral candidates for 480 researchers and teachers-researchers in its laboratories.

Post-Doctoral Recruitment

The ENS uses all funding resources available for post-doctoral recruitment: ENS fellowship opportunities/requests for proposals, regional fellowships and grants, use of the Thematic Network of Advanced Research and the Groups of Scientific Interest, CNRS post-docs, post-docs financed by private foundations and corporate foundations or by contract.
